AnnotationThis research examines the extent to which official statistics for the period 1992 to 1995 have underestimated the growth in homelessness in the over 60s. It investigates and presents case studies on the major causes of home loss: marriage breakdown; intergenerational conflict; financial problems, including the difficulty of sustaining home ownership in recessionary times; and physical violence. Wide variations in the definition of old age and what constitutes homelessness are revealed in the research, with subsequent differences of approach by local authorities in dealing with rehousing and other initiatives. A recommendation is made for central government to institute a system for the comprehensive recording and monitoring of older homeless - suggested as those aged 50 and over.
