Annotation | The two schemes evaluated in this report - Barnard Castle in County Durham (the Teesdale scheme), and Ware in East Hertfordshire - are distinctive in that they offer an additional 'emergency' element to the planned respite care. Carers can register for a 24-hour emergency service which they can call on at times of crisis. The evaluation looked at meeting of funders' requirements, the extent to which carers' needs are met, and what could be learned in setting up and organising a service to ensure its efficiency and effectiveness. Results indicate that the scheme has been successful in providing a planned respite service to local carers, and in offering the security of an emergency service when required. Fears that the service would be costly have so far been unproven. |
