Annotation | Grandparent education classes have been demonstrated to improve intergenerational relationships, but there have been no previous programmes to meet the needs of great-grandparents, who represent the fastest growing sector of the population in the United States. In the pilot project reported on, 20 white women and men, aged 77 to 91, from a long-term care centre were trained to guide classes for their peers on intergenerational relationships. Meetings were held twice a week with fellow residents, to acquaint them with methods of co-operative learning, implications of lessons, and ways to conduct informal assessment. Reports from the participants, observations by this article's researchers, and anecdotal evidence showed that the novel methods used to deliver instruction and evaluate learning were effective, and should be implemented on a broader scale. |
