AnnotationThis article presents results of a survey carried out in the project 'Preparation to Retirement through Older Persons', financed by the European Commission in the European Year of Older People and Solidarity between Generations. The study analyses the problems and needs concerning retirement, to gain knowledge on which to base the planning of retirement preparation programmes for those still professionally active. The authors analysed questionnaire responses on the experiences and suggestions of 478 retirees belonging to a voluntary association for elderly people. Results indicate that more than half had no problems in their retirement experience; generally there were few differences due to sex, age, or work experience. Above all, there was great interest in programmes that could help retirees to face the period of withdrawal from work successfully.
