Annotation | This study was designed to examine whether participants would demonstrate improved reading comprehension by reading a series of six passages, each preceded by an advance organiser. It was reasoned that participants might need practice with an intervention before showing improvement. A sample of 30 older men (mean age 72.06 years) and 28 younger (mean age 26.75 years) adults was randomly assigned to three treatment conditions: control, advance organiser, or advance organiser preceded by orienting instructions. Participants read the series of passages in two sessions spaced one week apart. Results indicated that the orienting instructions significantly helped both age groups, and served to greatly reduce performance differences between the two groups. |
