AnnotationThis article examines the definition of the meaning of life. It suggests that the concept is best understood when viewed as 'meaning making', that is, as an individual activity which occurs when people are faced with experiences which challenge their basic assumptions about the world. Such experiences are used as illustrations to explain meaning making by older adults. Meaning making is favourably compared with perspective transformation, which establishes a theoretical framework for discussing ways of looking at the meaning of life in educational experiences. Techniques for teaching critical thinking have been identified as effective instructional methods for facilitating perspective transformation, and are proposed as useful ways to look at meaning in educational opportunities for older learners.
