AnnotationMost information on the menopause to date originate from research conducted in developed countries. This report reviews current research on the menopause, paying particular attention to the effectiveness of various research methods, and assesses its relevance to women in developing countries. It also updates information on topics covered by the WHO Scientific Group that met in 1980 (Research on the menopause: report of a WHO Scientific Group, 1981). Studies reviewed include the demography of the menopause; endocrinology, symptoms and treatment of the menopause; the cultural context; contraception; osteoporosis and fractures; and cardiovascular disease. The report also examines the benefits of hormone therapy (HRT) in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, and the effects of such therapy on breast and gynaecological cancers. It concludes with specific recommendations for further research.
