AnnotationVerbal, non-verbal, academic and social interactions between schoolchildren aged 9 to 11 and older people in an intergenerational horticultural programme were observed and recorded over a 12 week period. Interactions were modified from a set of behaviours designated for standardised behaviours in the "Generations Together" programme developed and managed by Sally Newman of the University of Pittsburgh. Pairings between each child and older person were made at the beginning and maintained throughout the study. Results suggest that group gardening-related activities are more conducive to intergenerational interaction than craft-type activities. In addition, the benefit of using observers who can share information on what they see happening during an activity was of value.
