AnnotationGardening is a major leisure pursuit and therapeutic activity enhancing physical and mental health - with a role for the professional horticultural therapist (HT). Two surveys on horticultural therapist education and competency skills related to older people are reported: a 1995 survey of 33 members of the American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA), with specialisms in 'education' and 'older adults'; and a 1994 survey of directors of 41 educational programmes associated with the AHTA. Specific topics discussed include: education programmes with an age element in their curricula; competencies that should be taught with specific content on older adults; the importance of introductory gerontology courses in HT curriculum; and future challenges in teaching about older people in terms of curriculum, faculty, students and employment. Survey results could help the HT profession to enhance its educational programmes with older people's needs in mind.
