AnnotationThis paper investigates the design of garden spaces for those with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The paradise garden is used as a model for a restorative environment, which can be a resource for designers, healthcare providers and others interested in places which contribute to well-being. Research and use of historical precedents are used, to confirm preference for integrating certain landscape elements (e.g. water, trees) into garden design. The components of the paradise garden are analysed as they apply to the abilities of those with AD. The model provides the basis for the design of three gardens at a specialised Alzheimer's centre in southwest Ohio, each of which caters for the environmental, social and physical needs at all stages of the disease.
