AnnotationThis survey, commissioned by the Alzheimer's Disease Society and carried out by Social Information Systems Ltd, was published to coincide with Alzheimer's Awareness Week in 1997. It tests the notion that in the reformed health service, the money follows the patient. It examined the extent to which health authorities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland had carried out an assessment of local needs for dementia services. The level of spending committed by each health authority in meeting these needs was also examined; and comparisons were made between authorities as to how resources were allocated. The questionnaire used and estimated numbers of people with dementia in the UK by health authority are included in appendices. The report concludes that the NHS reforms seem to have failed those with dementia and their carers, and that the new government has an opportunity to tackle the failures. The report also suggests that an identifiable and separately resourced dementia care service should be established by each health authority. (RH).
