AnnotationThis work was originally written as a dissertation at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, University of Augsburg, Germany, in 1996. The author examines older people in the context of traditional Nigerian society, aspects of their care, family structures, and traditional provision for them. The care of older people is presented as a joint responsibility of the church and the state, with an evaluation of their contributions. Finally, the establishment and historical development of various forms of insurance and other organised provisions for old age in Nigeria is discussed.
