AnnotationIn this study of the relationship between violent behaviour and nursing staffing levels on a psychogeriatric ward of a London teaching hospital over a 2 year period, an association was not demonstrated. These findings cast doubt on previous health studies which used similar methodology to demonstrate associations between violence and staffing levels. Further prospective studies using well validated and reliable instruments to measure violence are required, particularly because the present climate of cost efficiency and cut-backs induces pressure to reduce staffing levels.
