AnnotationThis study critically reviews empirical evidence for the effectiveness of preventive health programmes for older people living in the community. A literature review of randomised controlled trials published in English, generally involving subjects aged 65 and over, was conducted, using MEDLINE and other databases. The potential for cost savings and improved health outcomes was demonstrated. However, given the heterogeneity of studies and methodological weaknesses, the overall benefit is unclear. It is recommended that a randomised controlled trial be conducted to test the effectiveness of comprehensive preventive programmes for Australian older people.
