AnnotationThe former centralised health system, offering free universal care, has disintegrated, and the local production and distribution of pharmaceuticals has all but collapsed in the Russian Federation. While attempts are made to preserve the principle of free universal access, in reality patients are having to pay an increasing proportion of their medical and pharmaceutical costs, and are facing greater problems in obtaining medication. The authors use multiple regression analysis to explore the factors influencing pharmaceutical utilisation and expenditure in Russia. Results are comparable to those obtained from studies in other countries.
