AnnotationThis report is based on the proceedings of an International Symposium organised by the Foundation in Dublin in December 1993. It considers the effects of demographic change on productive employment and on prospects for an ageing workforce; encourages an emphasis away from retirement to retention and recruitment of older people, highlighting good practice and initiatives to improve their prospects - including improvement of the quality of working life and competitiveness. The report examines the key workplace challenges of: maintenance and promotion of health; workplace support for carers; the design and organisation of work; and the development and management - including training - of older people to meet labour market demands to be increasingly flexible. Recommendations are made for action by governments and the European Union (EU).
