AnnotationThe doubling of the over 80 European population in the next 30 years is likely to affect the combining of paid work and caregiving, and how employers' react to the situation. This report is based on a conference organised by the Foundation and the German Ministry for Family and Seniors held in Bonn in 1994. The report aims to: examine the effects of family care on job opportunities and quality of working life; document workplace initiatives to improve conditions for combining working and caring; assess current developments in the European Union; analyse how employers, unions, carers, and NGOs (non-government organisations) can help reconcile work and caregiving; and identify opportunities for action at EU level. The conference argued the need for an information exchange network, to raise awareness of carers' issues; to provide information and systematic research; and introduce equal opportunities and age discrimination legislation.
