AnnotationIn 1995, representatives of Community Services Volunteers, Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) and British Telecom (BT) visited Italy to learn about an Italian project where communication is maintained with isolated older people by use of the telephone. The following year BT invited RSVP and Community Network to help in developing projects to reduce isolation among older and disabled people in England. The new scheme was named Mrs Smith's Handbag, since the majority of isolated people who live alone are older women. BT invited voluntary organisations to apply for grants to develop innovative and low cost projects. This booklet describes the eight local projects that were awarded grants.
