AnnotationResearch on dementia is responding to the need for information, and overturning some myths about the usefulness of different types of dementia care. This article reviews three examples. 'Dementia: challenges and new directions', edited by Susan Hunter (Jessica Kingsley, 1997) includes a chapter by David Challis, Richard von Abernoff, Pamela Brown and John Chestman on care management and dementia, evaluating the Lewisham Intensive Case Management Scheme, which integrates several aspects of intervention. The Tayside Profile for Dementia Planning is used by local planners to assess needs of those suffering from dementia; this is described in 'Planning for the needs of people with dementia', by Paul Spicker and David Gordon ((Avebury, 1997). In Ageing and Society, vol 17 part 5, (September 1997), Bender and Cheston describe a three-stage model of the subjective world of dementia sufferers, and challenge some of the current concepts of dementia.
