AnnotationThis article considers the rehabilitation of older people as currently practised in the United Kingdom as an exemplar for the health care of older people generally. It argues that rehabilitation, and the nursing role in particular, is constrained by the functional model of health care prevalent within medicine. It is suggested that this results in partial and incomplete care which fails to meet the needs of many older people and their family carers. The tenets of gerontological nursing should be applied, so that a more sensitive, appropriate and comprehensive approach to rehabilitation can emerge. This article reviews recent literature in support of the author's argument.
