Communication a matter of life and death of the mind | Author(s) | John Killick |
Journal title | Journal of Dementia Care, vol 5, no 5, September/October 1997 |
Pages | pp 14-16 |
Keywords | Dementia ; Communication ; Listening ; Tape recordings [media]. |
Annotation | The author's work of listening to and recording the words of people with dementia has convinced him that they do retain insight into their predicament. The barrier which they (and we) have to fight against is the language in which to express their thoughts and feelings. John Killick cites examples from his conversations with those with dementia, and the attitudes displayed by staff caring for them. Reference is made to 'State of the art in dementia care' edited by Mary Marshall (Centre for Policy on Ageing - CPA, 1997), in which the author was a contributor, and in which communication is a central theme. |
