AnnotationDifferences in the amounts which people living in different parts of the country have to pay for basic services are significant and seem to be widening, according to the authors' main report (Local living costs; Policy Studies Institute). They examined available evidence on local variations in the costs of housing, council tax, water and electricity, and in some discretionary charges which certain groups of people also have to pay (e.g. meals-on-wheels and home care). The overall geographical variation in costs/charges, the effects on different types of low-income households, and the policy implications are outlined.
