The demographic timebomb will not explode in Britain for the foreseeable future | Author(s) | Veena Soni Raleigh |
Journal title | British Medical Journal, vol 315, no 7106, 23 August 1997 |
Pages | pp 442-443 |
Keywords | Demography ; Usage [services] ; Living patterns. |
Annotation | The author argues that recent forecasts about the economic consequences of population ageing are unduly alarmist: recent increases in the over 60s population in Britain were smaller between 1971 and 1994 than in previous decades. Of greater concern are trends in living patterns - decline in co-residence between older parents and children, the increase in living alone, rising divorce rates, and more women working - which affect the family's ability to provide support. This has led to more use of formal services. |
