The demographic timebomb
 — will not explode in Britain for the foreseeable future

AnnotationThe author argues that recent forecasts about the economic consequences of population ageing are unduly alarmist: recent increases in the over 60s population in Britain were smaller between 1971 and 1994 than in previous decades. Of greater concern are trends in living patterns - decline in co-residence between older parents and children, the increase in living alone, rising divorce rates, and more women working - which affect the family's ability to provide support. This has led to more use of formal services.
