Annotation | Older people constitute 18% of the population, but receive 45% of all prescription items, 78% of which are repeats. Whilst they are potentially the greatest beneficiaries of appropriate and optimal drug treatment, older people also suffer much drug-related disease caused by incorrect medication, inappropriate polypharmacology, or inadequate monitoring of therapy. These problems are particularly prevalent in patients in continuing care settings. The Working Party reviews trends and significant developments in medication for older people since the report's first edition in 1984. It sets out the principles underlying appropriate use of drugs in older people, and makes recommendations to all involved in the care of older people for safe and effective medication - prescribed and over the counter (OTC) preparations. |
