AnnotationThe proportion of the older population in the European Union (EU) countries who hold driving licences has been increasing over the years, and this trend is expected to continue. This report examines issues associated with the implications of driver population changes for future road safety in the EU. It looks at road casualty rates in the various countries in relation to age, and reviews findings from laboratory studies showing the decline in sensory, cognitive and physical abilities with increasing age. Although there is little evidence for the effect of such changes on driving performance, an analysis of accidents in which older drivers are involved shows that there may be a link. Practical measures which will help older people to drive safely are considered, including vehicle design, road design and advice to drivers.
