The effect of chronic diseases on physical function comparison between activities of daily living scales and the Physical Performance Scales | Author(s) | Renzo Rozzini, Giovanni B Frisoni, Luigi Ferrucci |
Journal title | Age and Ageing, vol 26, no 4, July 1997 |
Pages | pp 281-287 |
Keywords | Chronic illness ; Self care capacity ; Mobility ; Screening ; Evaluation ; Comparison ; Italy. |
Annotation | In this cross-sectional study of the entire population aged 70 and over, living in Ospitaletto (Brescia, northern Italy), a questionnaire was used to collect information on demographics, presence of several chronic diseases and basic and instrumental activities of daily living (BADL and IADL). BADL and IADL scores showed independent associations with cognitive deterioration, stroke, parkinsonism, heart disease, and hearing and visual loss, regardless of ADL score. A performance-based measure, such as the Physical Performance Test (PPT), may detect a functional limitation before it becomes measurable by traditional self-reported BADL and IADL scores. |
