Annotation | Defining contracts for the care of older people on the basis of number episodes is inappropriate, as it neglects requirements of patients with different physical disability and rehabilitation needs. Use of the Resource Utilization Groups, version III (RUG-III) explains the variation in resource use of older people each day based on their clinical characteristics, which is then used at fortnightly intervals and at discharge. The authors suggest that this model could be used as the basis for contracts for care of older patients. It acknowledges that due to their clinical characteristics, some patients require more staff time to achieve rehabilitation and discharge. |
