Annotation | This Israeli study compared patients aged over 65 hospitalised from their homes with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), with CAP patients aged 55-64. The proportion of pneumococcal infection, the most common aetiology for CAP, increased from 29.6% in the 55-64 age group, through 45.6% in the 65-74 age group, up to 57.8% in the 75 and over group. Mortality in patients over 75 was significantly higher than in the two younger groups. The proportion of patients treated with antibiotics before admission decreased with increasing age. |
