| Annotation | In 1983, the Pan American Health Organization and the countries of the region established a general plan of action for comprehensive care of older people, and requested each country to submit socioeconomic, demographic and service information. This conference paper describes the activities of the programme, and outlines the priority areas for action: mobilisation of national resources; promotion of the exchange and dissemination of gerontological information; development of national standards, plans and policies; gerontology and geriatric training programmes; and research promotion. |
