AnnotationStudies in humanistic gerontology centre on the structural pressures and constraints affecting older people, the absence of meaning in older people's lives and the sense of doubt and uncertainty, and empowerment. This article reviews three books which embrace this theme, all published by Springer Publishing Company, New York: Handbook of the humanities and aging, edited by Thomas R Cole, David D van Tassel and Robert Kastenbaum (1992); Voices and visions of aging: towards a critical gerontology, edited by Thomas R Cole, W Andrew Achenbaum, Patricia L Jakobi and Robert Kastenbaum (1993); and, Societal impact on aging: historical perspectives, edited by K Warner Schaie and W Andrew Achenbaum (1993). The strengths and weaknesses of humanistic gerontology are assessed.
