AnnotationDespite the importance of the transition from married life to widowhood, few studies have considered its impact on older people. 108 Canadian women (mean age 69.17 years) widowed for less than three years participated in this study. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that the health factor from the Hassles Scale for Older Adults, threat to self-esteem from the Primary Appraisal Questionnaire, and escape-avoidance from the Ways of Coping Questionnaire together accounted for 65% of the psychological distress variance as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory. The variable most related to the level of distress was health. Methodological implications as well as suggestions for future projects are discussed. (RH).
