Annotation | Model building in epidemiological-ecological research on ageing is hampered by the prevailing paradigm of standard empiricism, lack of knowledge about biological origins and causes of ageing, and problems in differentiating the ageing process from age-related diseases and disabilities. Consequently, the identification of associations or causal relations between risk factors, ageing, diseases and disabilities suffers from a number of conceptual and methodological problems which sometimes can lead to research results which are absurd in the context of real life, despite their formal correctness. This article looks at these factors, and evaluates theoretical premises and models in epidemiological-ecological research, whether explicit or implicit. The focus in the analysis is on the group and population level, even though the ultimate aim of research is to produce knowledge also applicable at an individual level. (RH). |
