Competence and the three A's autonomy, authenticity and aging | Author(s) | David Checkland, Michel Silberfeld |
Journal title | Canadian Journal on Aging, vol 12, no 4, Winter 1993 |
Pages | pp 453-468 |
Keywords | Competence ; Cognitive processes ; Independence ; Self esteem ; Theory. |
Annotation | The concepts of competence, autonomy, and authenticity are examined. Various senses of `autonomy' are distinguished, and it is argued that two of these do not embody concepts distinct from mental competence (decision-making capacity), on the one hand, and authenticity, on the other. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing the questions of capacity / competence, and when beneficent intervention is justified. (RH). |
