 — autonomy, authenticity and aging

KeywordsCompetence ; Cognitive processes ; Independence ; Self esteem ; Theory.
AnnotationThe concepts of competence, autonomy, and authenticity are examined. Various senses of `autonomy' are distinguished, and it is argued that two of these do not embody concepts distinct from mental competence (decision-making capacity), on the one hand, and authenticity, on the other. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing the questions of capacity / competence, and when beneficent intervention is justified. (RH).
