AnnotationThis article reviews studies on the determinants and consequences of alcohol-related problems which met quality criteria, with other studies on screening tests, relevant for use with those aged 65 and over. Determinants include history of alcohol use and abuse, social isolation, and reduced mobility. Consequences consist of risks of hip fracture from falls; neoplasms, and psychiatric illness. Screening tests available focus on high levels of alcohol use, abuse and dependency, and are not useful in screening for hazardous consumption resulting from low levels of alcohol use alone or in combination with medications, mental illness or pre-existing diminished physical, emotional or social function. Research is needed on the consequences of lower levels of alcohol consumption on the physical and psychosocial health of older people, and on methods distinguishing alcohol-related from age-related problems. Tests should be developed to anticipate a growing public health problem.
