AnnotationThe challenges posed by ageing populations and changes in state welfare provision, which led to an increased reliance on family members to provide care, are facing other countries as well as Britain. This article gives a precis of European research on family obligations, paying for care, workplace support for carers, and young carers as reflected in five publications: H Jani-Le Bris, 'Family care of dependent older people in the European Community (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, 1993); J Millar and A Warman, 'Family obligations in Europe' (Family Policy Studies Centre, 1993); C Glendinning and E McLaughlin, 'Paying for care: lessons from Europe' (HMSO, 1993); D Berry-Lound and K Marsh, 'Working and caring for older people in Europe: a three country comparison' (Help the Aged, 1996); and S Becker (ed), 'Young carers in Europe: an exploratory cross-national study in Britain, France, Sweden and Germany' (Young Carers Research Group, 1995).
