AnnotationThis article discusses two qualitative studies reported on in the journal Ageing and Society. 'Elderly married persons living in long-term care institutions: a qualitative analysis of feelings' (J W Gladstone, 1995) examines the impact of the move into residential care from the point of view of both the new resident and of the husband or wife who remains in the community. 'The mask of dementia: images of demented residents' (H Golander and A E Raz, 1996) reports on research from Israel which shows that people with dementia can be seen as having positive social identities by those who live with them in residential settings.
