AnnotationLeading gerontologists discuss theoretical developments in ageing, drawing on social science and humanities research from the United States and the UK. They challenge the idea that gerontology is solely concerned with the consequences of an ageing population. Part I reflects on the values which different disciplines and approaches bring to the subject: critical gerontology, postmodernism, culture and ethnicity, literature, historical research, and life history method. Part II represents the application of concepts and theories: intergenerational relations, the geographical context of spatial relationships, visual images, citizenship, care relationships, identity, and a feminist perspective on the ageing body. A final section on theory and concepts in social gerontology focuses on epistemological issues - the strengths and weaknesses of disciplinary perspectives; and on concepts of ageing and later life.
