AnnotationIn this comprehensive overview, the author examines how community care has developed in the context of formal and informal services. Its organisation and implementation, assessing need at individual and general population level, and long-stay care are covered in detail. In considering the prospects for community care, the author's view is that it is too early to state with any confidence that it is working. We need longer term data about the quality, quantity and responsiveness of services available, before giving judgement. A similar trend is detected across Europe, where there is also a desire to reduce the amount of institutional care, and to develop social care markets and collaboration in care.
