AnnotationThe role of vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for osteoporosis has recently received increasing attention. In addition, older people are at risk from this deficiency because of a number of age-related changes in vitamin D metabolism, including inadequate dietary intake, decreased intestinal absorption, and reduction in exposure to ultraviolet radiation due to decreased mobility. This study investigated the prevalence and seasonal variation of vitamin D deficiency among older residents of long-term care facilities in Toronto, Canada. Findings showed that vitamin D deficiency and borderline vitamin D status were common in long-term care residents, and that seasonal variation in the prevalence remained significant. The study concluded that evaluation of interventions to improve the status of vitamin D nutrition in this population is needed.
