AnnotationThis Belgian study evaluated the effect of ageing on both the mechanical properties and wrinkling of facial skin in 180 white women aged between 18 and 67 years, a proportion of whom used hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Mechanical properties of the skin were measured on the face using a computerised suction device. Skin contours were assessed using optical profilometry and computerised image analysis. Results showed that skin ageing of the face is characterised by a progressive increase in extensibility associated with a decreased elasticity. The loss of tonicity is accompanied by a progressive deepening of facial creases. HRT was shown to limit the age-related rheological changes, however, it did not appear to limit the number and depth of wrinkles.
