Annotation | This article reports on a 3-year follow-up examination of a representative population of 347 non-demented 85-year old individuals in Gothenburg, Sweden. The study included neuropsychiatric, neuropsychological, and physical examinations, and key informant interviews. Dementia was defined according to the criteria proposed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd edition, revised) (DSM-III-R). Findings revealed that almost one-tenth of non-demented persons between the ages of 85 and 88 became demented each year, emphasising the magnitude of the dementia problem in the very old. (AKM). |
