AnnotationThis article describes and evaluates the development of the Prevention for Elderly Persons (PEP) Program. The programme, a joint partnership between a community agency and an academic institution, identifies the preventive needs of community-dwelling older people, uses a customised computerised data management system to generate recommendations, and delivers an intervention designed to improve implementation if these recommendations. During the first 2 years of the programme, 927 persons aged 60 years and over were screened. The most common physician-initiated preventive recommendations were: tetanus booster, aspirin, pneumonia vaccination, and colorectal cancer screening. The most common self-care recommendations were: calcium supplements and breast self examination. (AKM).
