AnnotationThis study aimed to determine the extent to which family members participate in the day-to-day management of diabetes mellitus in older persons, and in older diabetics' medical encounters, and to identify patient and family characteristics associated with this participation. Subjects were family members of patients aged 70 years and over participating in the Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT) Study of type II diabetics, a longitudinal observational study. Findings showed that the 357 family members were older, mostly women, and were usually the spouses of diabetic patients. Between 22% and 50% of family members reported helping with various aspects of diabetes care; 35.6% participated regularly in their relatives' medical encounters. Family member involvement in the day-to-day management of diabetes and in the medical encounters was more likely when patients were functionally disabled. (AKM).
