AnnotationMemory loss is a common complaint of postmenopausal women, however, whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can alleviate such deficits are not clear. The aim of this study was to determine if postmenopausal women using HRT performed better on demanding cognitive tests than women not using HRT, and if this beneficial effect on cognition is caused by oestrogen-related prevention of silent ischaemic brain damage. The participants comprised a total of 70 women using HRT and 140 women not using HRT, and were all part of the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study. Findings revealed that HRT users performed better than non-users on almost all neuropsychological tests administered. A lower rate of clinically unsuspected ischaemic brain damage in postmenopausal women were also found. (AKM).
