AnnotationSleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is associated with essential hypertension in middle-aged adults, however, little is known about this relationship in older people. This study examined the relationship in 140 hypertensive older men in a hypertension clinic. Results showed that SDB was diagnosed in 80% of the participants. Subjects with SDB were heavier, slept longer, and complained of daytime sleepiness. Fifty percent of all subjects snored more than 10% of the total sleep time, and 26% snored for more than one third of the night. No significant differences in blood pressure values were observed in subjects with SDB when compared to subjects without SDB. However, a considerable number of subjects presenting with hypertensive blood pressure values despite treatment could be identified. Subjects presenting with hypertensive blood pressure values had significantly higher severity index of SDB than subjects with normal blood pressure values. The study lends support to data showing that undiagnosed SDB is a common phenomenon in older men, leading to impaired daytime functioning and impairment of overall quality of life. (AKM).
