AnnotationThis report reviews the socio-demographic and health trends of older people in London and their use of health and social services. It aims to identify the areas of service provision that are functioning well and those that are deficient. The age structure - particularly in Inner London - has changed markedly in the last twenty years, such that London has the lowest share of over 60s in England; but there is an over-representation of over 75s. The report emphasises the diversity of London's older people, highlighting that their individual requirements for well-coordinated, patient-centred care are incompatible with the complex pattern of service provision. The multiplicity of administrative boundaries and poor standard of information and monitoring systems mean that care of older people with multiple, chronic conditions often falls through the cracks - raising questions about access to hospital treatment for those living in deprived parts of the city.
