AnnotationThis study at an acute psychogeriatric unit at Warlingham Park Hospital looked at the relationship between psychogeriatric hospital admissions and variations in the degree of dependency with regard to the primary psychiatric diagnosis. On admission, patients underwent a full psychiatric assessment. Dependency levels, cognitive state and depression were assessed on admission and discharge using the Stockton Geriatric Rating Scale ((SGRS), the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) respectively. Patients with functional illness showed a significant reduction in dependency levels compared to organic cases during admission.
