Annotation | This study was conducted at a psychogeriatric unit in Warrington, in which 198 cases of Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association - National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke - ADRDA-NINCDS diagnostic criteria) were compared to two selected control groups (164 other dementias and 176 non-dementing group) with respect to their smoking history. The data obtained suggest that cigarette smoking is less frequent in men with Alzheimer's disease than in other patients referred to the same psychogeriatric service. The absence of effect in females is unexpected. The study supports previous findings of inverse relationships between smoking and Alzheimer's disease. This does not suggest that smoking is used as a preventive measure for Alzheimer's disease. |
