Suicide in later life how to spot the risks | Author(s) | David Duffy |
Journal title | Nursing Times, vol 93, no 11, 12 March 1997 |
Pages | pp 56-57 (Elderly care counts) |
Keywords | Suicide ; At risk ; Depression ; Recognition. |
Annotation | A quarter of all suicides in the UK are committed by people over 65. Health care staff often fail to recognise depression and other suicide risk factors in older people. Ageism may play a part in this oversight. By listening to older people and learning to recognise the warning signs, nurses can identify and treat the underlying problem, perhaps preventing the often fatal consequences. |
