AnnotationIt is commonly understood that personality changes occur in early in the development of dementia in patients. This study in Sweden investigates whether strengths and weaknesses - described by the Eriksons as basic qualities in the person - could be interpreted in severely demented patients during a caring activity, and whether a training programme in 'integrity promoting care' made any difference in detecting these qualities. The morning care of 5 patients was video-recorded, and a phenomenological-hermeneutic analysis of interaction between patient and staff was conducted. Findings suggest that demented patients' strengths and weaknesses are so well concealed that intensive interpretation is necessary to make them evident, suggesting the value of appropriate training.
